ResourcesThere are numerous resources that we have found helpful in our work. We have chosen to share a few of our favorite books, tapes, and organizations with you. This list is by no means exhaustive but rather a sampling of what we have learned from others. The books can usually be purchased through Amazon.com and some can be directly ordered from the resources. Organizations: Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health. (http://www.sash.net). This is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping addicts and their families learn more about Sexual Addiction and the professionals that treat the disease. Atlanta Area Service Group (http://aasg.info) There are five or six anonymous groups based on the principles of Alcoholic’s Anonymous in existence. In Atlanta, all the 12 Step groups have chosen to align in a service organization so that all area meetings can be published on this one site. Resources for Parents include Dear Child of Divorce (http://dearchildofdivorce.org), and http://parentsanonymous.com which also offers resources and support for parents. To understand Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and to locate training and organizations using EAP try http://eagala.org A good resource for coaching and training is http://mentorcoach.com Books: Sexual and Relationship Addiction Resources: I highly recommend Lonely All the Time by Ralph Earle Ph.D. This book addresses sexual addiction from both the addict and the family member’s perspective. Another classic is Don’t Call it Love, Patrick Carnes, Ph.D. This book interviews addicts with 10 or more years in recovery and outlines the various categories of sexual addiction as well as the tasks of recovery. Sexual Addiction has exploded for millions of people who would not have ever ventured down this road as a result of the Internet. The two best books to deal with this issue are Untangling the Net: Sex, Porn, and >Fantasy Obsession in the Internet Age (2006) By Jennifer Schneider & Robert Weiss and In the Shadows of the Net : Breaking Free of Compulsive Online Sexual Behavior by Patrick Carnes, David Delmonico, Elizabeth Griffin, and Joseph Moriarity. Both give a very accurate picture of the dangers of the world wide web. Sexual addiction is not always about compulsive acting out. Sometimes sex addicts “act in” and we call that Sexual Anorexia. A good explanation of that disorder is outlined in
Sexual Anorexia: Overcoming Sexual Self-Hatred by Patrick Carnes and Joseph Moriarity. For anyone with secrets from their partners – I recommend Disclosing Secrets: When, to Whom, and How Much to Reveal by Deb Corley, Ph.D. and Jennifer Schneider, M.D. Ph.D. For Relationship issues: For women in lonely relationships I recommend Co-Dependent No More by Melody Beattie. This book deals primarily with people who are in relationships with addicts but it applies to many of us who are not in those type relationships. Another good option dealing with Co-Dependency is Love is a Choice by Robert Hemfelt, Frank Minirth, and Paul Meier Pia Melody’s Facing Love Addiction: Giving Yourself the Power to Change the Way You Love is an excellent resource for a better understanding of how people get stuck in relationships. Wyatt Webb has written a book called What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do that is a good resource for dealing with being stuck in relationships. The DNA of Relationships by Dr. Gary Smalley does a good job of explaining how relationships work. What Happy People Know by Dan Baker, Ph.D. is an excellent resource that outlines what people who find their lives happy and fulfilling are doing to keep them that way. Spirituality Resources: I recommend Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts by Caroline Myss. These also come in a tape series. Her work is interesting and challenging. The Power of Intention by Wayne Dyer is just one of the many books he has published. All of his work is powerful and clear. Perhaps my favorite book is When the Heart Waits by Sue Monk Kidd. This is a personal look at one woman’s journey through what many have called the “dark night of the soul”. Parenting Resources: One of Gary's favorites for parents is Undefended Love by Jeff Psaris, Ph.D., Marlena S. Lyons, Ph.D. Divorce Resources: Spiritual Divorce by Debbie Ford is an excellent resource for anyone going through, or considering, divorce. Another good book about divorce is Crazy Time by Abigail Trafford. Equine Therapy Resources: As you will see throughout the site we believe strongly that horses are excellent teachers and therapists. To understand how this works a little better you might read Dancing With Your Dark Horse: How Horse Sense Helps Us find Balance, Strength and Wisdom by the horse trainer Chris Irwin. |
